Transition to GFE from FL

Module main decoration

Transition from FL to GFE at the Academy is supported really carefully. We give you lots of help to choose the right GFE programme for you.

We do this by giving you opportunities to:

  • Talk to specialist Academy staff about your career ideas
  • Complete work experience to try out your ideas about work
  • Visit our partner mainstream colleges
  • Attend an interview with support from CSWs
  • Complete taster days
  • Meet with our local careers service advisors

The great thing about FL and GFE at the Academy is that there are so many different routes you can choose from to achieve your long-term aim.

For example:

Mike

Mike did three years in FL doing a mix of small courses in things that interested him like Art & Design, Hospitality and Catering and Creative iMedia.  He also continued to improve his Maths, English, ICT and BSL.  Mike said he was interested in office work using computers so he started doing work experience to try this for himself and he loved it.

He decided that his long term destination was to work in an office and he knew he needed to get a full vocational qualification to achieve this.  He chose to move to GFE to study a BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Business Admin at Exeter College with one day a week on work experience.

Amina

Amina joined FL thinking she wanted to either work with children or work in catering.  She studied for two years in FL doing a mix of small courses that helped her explore her ideas.  She studied Childcare, Health & Social Care, Hospitality & Catering as well as improving her Maths, English, ICT and BSL. She completed work experience in Childcare, Catering and Health & Social Care.

Amina loved the Health & Social Care and decided she wanted a career working with and supporting people.  She realised that she needed a full vocational qualification and made the transition to GFE. In GFE she studied a Level 2 Work Based Diploma in Health & Social Care. This course included 2 days a week work experience.
