Hair @ the Academy

Module main decoration

Hair@theAcademy is a provider of Hair and Beauty courses, specialising in re-engaging disengaged adults, young people and NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Working in partnership with Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT), Learn Devon and with the support of Exeter Foundation, Careers South West and Jobcentre Plus, it offers a range of courses including:

• VTCT Level 1 Certificates in Hair and Beauty
• VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s and Men’s Hairdressing
• VTCT Level 2 Certificate in Barbering
• Level 3 award in Education and Training
• Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

Hair@theAcademy is committed to ensuring learners are prepared for employment whether for the first time or returning. With partnership support, these courses are designed to meet the varying needs of learners, encouraging them to reach their full potential.

The Salon

The salon works with schools across Exeter and East Devon to provide sessions in partnership with the Learning2Work programme. This can include, for example, free taster sessions for students during Learner Enrichment Weeks or more tailored paid for workshops provided on a regular basis. As the salon is small, it can be flexible to meet the needs of individual students.

For deaf students, the salon offers a fantastic opportunity to learn practical, work-related skills within the supportive Academy environment. The salon has also played a key part in pioneering the Academy’s ‘reverse inclusion’ approach, bringing deaf and hearing students together to learn in a space where deaf students feel supported. Deaf students are able to build their confidence in communicating with their hearing peers, whilst hearing students who come to learn in the salon benefit from becoming more deaf aware and learning how to overcome communication barriers. This highly successful approach forms part of the design principles for the new Academy. Hair@theAcademy will have a front facing salon as part of the development, which will be open to the local community. This will take the approach a step further, enabling members of the public to be more open to communicating with deaf people and allowing both communities to interact on a daily basis.

Partnership with MyHairDressers.com

MyHairDressers.com has offered free online training to Hair@theAcademy students. The partnership will allow students to access its library of training videos covering all aspects of hairdressing and fashion. The step by step guides are clear and engaging for students and can be accessed at any time.

A Success Story

Since opening in 2008 the salon has gone from strength to strength and now successfully offers various tailor made courses for students in Exeter and East Devon. More than 130 students have passed a certificated course and over 50 students have attended taster courses, including students from the Academy. In recent academic years Hair@theAcademy has achieved a 100% exam pass rate and 93% of students that attend the salon went on to further hairdressing courses.

The salon has an excellent working relationship with Exeter College, allowing a smooth transition for students to progress on to further studies. The salon strives to offer the best educational experience and to bring about the best in young people supporting them in making positive educational choices, with clear potential for developing a career.

The salon continues to seek funding to extend its provision to meet the high level of demand for this specialist training.

The proposal for the new Academy in Exeter presents a fantastic opportunity to create a dynamic purpose-built salon with a more prominent shop front from which to operate.

The Salon’s Story

Salon Hair & Beauty Tutor Mary Pugsley has worked hard to develop the salon from an idea into reality and from its early days delivering half day sessions through to its current provision of workshops and courses.
