Family Sign Language Weekends

Our next Family Sign Language Weekend is 18-19 May 2019 at Exeter Deaf Academy. Our free Family Sign Language Weekends for families, friends and professionals who may know or work with deaf children.

British Sign Language (BSL) Instructor Nikki James, in partnership with our Complex Learning Lead Karma Stocks delivers a fun and engaging weekend, which consistently receives positive reviews from all of our attendees. Nikki is a native BSL user, qualified and experienced in delivering the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) accredited Family Sign Language workshop.

Our Family Sign Language Weekends are suitable for relations and friends of a deaf child and professionals who may work with deaf children, and would like to learn some basic sign language, get tips on Deaf Awareness and build their signing vocabulary. We aim to make it as fun as possible. There aren’t any exams or assessments and you can learn at your own pace.

The informal workshop is split over two days in an inclusive and friendly environment. Both days begin at 10am, finishing at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday. Lunch is included and there is free parking at the Academy. Accommodation is available for families travelling from far away. Places are limited and offered on a first come basis.

"This was just incredible... I learnt a valuable lesson this weekend... I'd always thought I, as a person, really struggle with learning new languages, spoken or signed....but I realised here that it's not how I learn that I struggled with, it's the way it's taught! And let me tell you all that what the Deaf Academy have put together is amazing, I've taken away so much more than I thought I would. Highly recommended to ANYONE thinking of learning BSL for ANY reason."  Scott, January 2019
