Residential Accommodation

Module main decoration

The Deaf Academy has a large residential community, providing residential accommodation for students of all age ranges and abilities.

Our college residence has 7 separate flats. You will be accommodated according to your independence skills rather than your chronological age and all flats are same sex. All students have their own room and are issued with a key to keep their valuables safe. There are shared social, dining, sports and leisure areas.

Each flat offers various levels of independence and as you gain skills, you can move into more independent areas. Even the most independent students will have the support of Care Staff but at the level they need. Flats for students who require higher levels of support have extra safety measures such as alarmed doors but this is not used as standard.

With the support of experienced Care Officers, our students also carry out an Independent Living Skills Programme (ILSP) and 24-Hour Curriculum, which enables them to prepare to live independently in the future. Care staff have good signing skills and all have achieved, or are working towards, a level 3 NVQ in social care.

Care within the Academy is based on the fundamental principle that all students are supported to become as independent as possible. Through the ILSP the Academy is able, with student input where appropriate, to assess the individual skills and indentify the needs of the student to be able to develop a target based plan which enables students to achieve realistic goals. The ILSP begins at the start of a student’s placement and will progress until they leave.
